University of Ibadan students go to class without bathing and sleep in darkness

The condition in which the students of University of Ibadan are living has become a major point of concern as the students have spoken up on the hardships and sufferings they have been enduring

Students living on the campus have a lot of tales to share when asked what they have been through as a result of the ongoing strike which has most of the non-academic staff laying fallow. The students said they have been living a tough life with the lack of basic amenities like water and electricity. According to them, there has been no water in the campus as the sources of water and electricity have been turned off by the staff on strike.

Activities in the university has been on hold since March 20, 2017 when staff declared indefinite strike because the union said there has been illegal deductions of pension money from their salaries. This affected academic and administrative activities in the university. The unpaid promotion arrears, shortfall in salary payment and welfare of staff are other reasons causing the agitation of workers. When things like this happen, students bear the brunt more. On this note, students have complained about not having water to bath in the hostel and not having electricity in the classes as well as in the hostels.


Each time there is crisis between the school administration and the staff, the students are always at the receiving end,” said Kayode Onifade, a 300 level student of the Faculty of Arts. “Our lecturers now combine their work with that of non academic staff because they get the keys to open the classrooms for lectures to hold and lock them after. “In the hostel, we sleep in darkness. Many of us attend classes without taking our bath because there is no water. Both parties must reach an agreement for the sake of the students. The living condition is terrible,” added Onifade.
